No. 14 Men's Soccer Ends Texas Trip With Loss To Southwestern

Georgetown, Texas -- The University of Lynchburg men's soccer team completed its two-game road trip to Texas with a 3-1 loss to Southwestern on Sunday afternoon at Southwestern Varsity Falls.

The No. 14 Hornets (2-1) succumb to their first loss of the season against the Pirates (2-1). Southwestern opened the scoring at 30:31 when Grey Richards scored with an assist from Brady Faulkner. The Hornets answered before halftime as Izaack Cruz recorded his second goal of the season at 42:20. Noah Coughlin supplied the assist, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1.

The Pirates regained the lead at 71:19 on an unassisted goal from Pierre Mazzawi. Richards added his second goal of the match at 84:32, with Daniel Sartorio recording the assist, to complete the scoring.

Lynchburg finished with 15 shots, including seven in the first half and eight after halftime. The Hornets placed three attempts on goal. Cruz scored on his only shot, while Saul Lopez Coreas and Carlos Andres Romero recorded Lynchburg's other shots on target.

Saul Lopez Coreas led the Hornets with three total attempts. William Casey, Matthew Viscuso and Jefferson Lopez Coreas each took two shots. Bruno Rihl Silva, Chris Bovo, Chris Wiley, Angel Romero, Cruz and Carlos Andres Romero recorded one attempt apiece.

Vikram Couto played all 90 minutes in goal and made nine saves, including eight during the second half. Southwestern goalkeeper TJ Bass stopped two shots. The Hornets generated 10 corner kicks while allowing only two. Lynchburg earned five corners in each half, while both of Southwestern's corners came after halftime. The Pirates finished with a 21-15 advantage in shots and placed 12 attempts on goal.

Possession was even at 50 percent for each team. Lynchburg committed 12 fouls compared with 14 by Southwestern. The Hornets received one yellow card, while the Pirates were shown four. Neither team received a red card. Lynchburg was not called offside, and Southwestern was flagged once.

Next up, the Hornets will head south once again, this time to Lookout Mountain, Ga. to take on Maryville on Friday, September 11 at 3 p.m., then Covenant on Saturday, September 12 at noon.
