WINCHESTER, Va. – The University of Lynchburg field hockey team delivered a dominant performance Sunday afternoon, shutting out Denison, 7-0, at Aikens Stadium.
The Hornets improved to 2-1 on the season behind four goals from Sydney Cappallo and a defensive effort that held Denison without a shot on goal. Lynchburg outshot the Big Red 31-2, including a 24-0 advantage in shots on goal, while earning 12 penalty corners.
Lynchburg wasted little time taking control. Cappallo opened the scoring just 2:28 into the contest off an assist from Khanyisile Mzizi. Less than two minutes later, Grace Peterson doubled the advantage on a penalty corner off an assist from Taylor Secrist, sending the Hornets into the second quarter ahead 2-0.
Cappallo and the Lynchburg offense continued to roll into the second period, the junior transfer found the cage twice more before halftime to complete her hat trick and give Lynchburg a 4-0 advantage at the break. The Hornets continued the pressure immediately out of halftime as Secrist scored just 34 seconds into the third quarter on an assist from Sofia Boon.
Cappallo added her fourth goal of the afternoon in the fourth, this time off an assist from Peterson. Boon put the finishing touch on the victory less than three minutes later, scoring off a feed from Lauren Mark to make it 7-0.
Cappallo finished with six shots on goal on eight attempts, while Secrist put all seven of her shots on target. Cappallo is the third Hornet to score 4+ goals in the past two years, joining Anna Dorrestijn and Maddie Schuter. Peterson recorded a goal and an assist, while Mzizi, Boon, Mark and Secrist each contributed an assist. Shay Schoones played all 60 minutes in goal as the Hornets secured their first shutout of the season.
Lynchburg continues their early season road trip with a contest at Mary Washington awaits on deck next Wednesday, Sept. 9th.Â
