Lynchburg field hockey blanks Washington & Lee in victory

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Lynchburg College field hockey team defeated Washington & Lee University by a score of 8-0  Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

With a full, boisterous crowd backing the Hornets on Homecoming Weekend, Lynchburg's offense struck early and often. Sophomore Lindsay Leonard (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) scored the first goal of the game 1:47 into the first half off a pass from junior Amanda Wain (Fairfax, VA/Oakton). Leonard struck again less six minutes later when she netted another to put LC up 2-0.

Senior Jenny Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) scored the next goal off of a rebound at the 24:02 mark of the first half. After a timeout from the Generals, Weir netted another just 13 seconds later off an assist from freshman Haili Hartman (Centreville, VA/Centreville). With the Hornets up 4-0, junior Deanna Smith (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) scored a minute later at 22:41 when she cut down the right side and beat Generals goalie Caroline Sutherland for the goal.

Weir made it a hat-trick when she scored at 8:35 of the first half to put the Hornets up 6-0. Weir ended the day with three goals and two assists, she now has 12 goals and five assists on the season. Wain would net her first of the day off a corner pass from Weir to send LC into halftime up by seven.

Leonard would complete her hat-trick with a goal at 19:30 of the second half off a corner pass from Weir to cap the game at 8-0. Leonard has now surpassed her goal total of 10 for the 2009 season with her 11th goal of the season.

Junior goalie Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) worked a scoreless first half with one save before giving way to freshman goalies Hannah Myers (Stafford, VA/Colonial Forge) and Jordan Seeley (Louisville, KY/Louisville Collegiate).

Sutherland had 12 saves on the day for the Generals.

Lynchburg (9-2, 4-0) will host Shenandoah on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
