No. 13 Hornets Field Hockey beats Mary Washington 4-0 to open the season Wednesday
LYNCHBURG, VA - The No. 13 Lynchburg College field hockey team started the season out with a win by shutting out the University of Mary Washington by a score of 4-0 on a sunny Wednesday afternoon on Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg (1-0) got its first goal of the season from sophomore midfielder Shelly Milks (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) who pounded home a goal off a rebound at the 16:41 mark of the first half. Lindsay Leonard (Yorktown, VA/Grafton), followed with a goal at the 25:59 mark of the first half after taking a feed from Hayley Stough (Richmond, VA/Mills E. Godwin).
After halftime, senior Jenny Weir (Richmond, VA/James River) wasted no time in scoring her first goal of the season by putting in a goal off a rebound at the 36:38 mark. Weir, who had five shots in the contest, would also score another goal at 68:01, making her the scoring leader for the Hornets early in the season.
Junior goalie Tiffany Frye (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) worked the whole game for a shutout, and made seven saves in the game. Senior goalie Chrissy Bowdren of Mary Washington finished the game with 12 saves.
The Hornets will host Lebanon Valley College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on Shellenberger Field and then will play Denison University on Sunday at noon to finish off the first week of the season.
