LC Women's Basketball Falls to Shenandoah 58-54 in Season Opener
LYNCHBURG, VA – Freshman Shannon Allan registered a double-double in her first collegiate game as the Lynchburg College women's basketball team fell to Shenandoah University 58-54 in the season-opener for both teams Tuesday.
Allan registered ten rebounds, including seven on the defensive side, and chipped in 10 points. Senior Carly Greenlief scored a team-high 12 points while fellow senior Katie Crump also had 10 points. Each player also had eight boards in the game.
LC jumped out to a five-point lead in the first few minutes of the game with a 5-0 run. Shenandoah countered to take a 6-5 lead at 15:00 while both teams traded shots for the rest of the half. Lynchburg finished the first half with a two-point lead, heading to the locker room with the score favoring LC 24-22.
Shenandoah controlled the tempo to start the second half, leading 33-26 at the 15:23 mark. Lynchburg tied the game at 38-38 with 8:46 left off a jumper from Crump who added a free throw on the play as well.
SU took the lead after Crump's free throw and never relinquished it. Lynchburg cut the SU Hornets lead to three with a Caitlin Falls layup with 13 seconds to play, but Shenandoah kept LC from getting back into the game and defeated Lynchburg 58-54.
Sam Akers led Shenandoah (1-0) with 15 points, while Mandy Johnston kicked in 12. Nicole Gilbertson grabbed 12 boards for SU.
Lynchburg (0-1) will head to the Marymount Tip-off this weekend with a game against Marymount University on Friday at 6 p.m.
