Averett Defeats Lynchburg in City Stadium Matchup
LYNCHBURG, VA – Under the lights at Lynchburg City Stadium, the Averett University baseball team defeated Lynchburg College 4-0 in non-conference action on Thursday night.
Lynchburg was held to two hits by Averett starting pitcher Matt Mitchell who pitched a complete game while only walking one and striking out eight. Senior Chase Vaden (Lynch Station, VA/Altavista) got the starting nod for the Hornets giving up one hit and two runs. Pitching in the relief role, Justin Ferrell (Red Oak, VA/Randolph-Henry) hurled four innings, yielding four hits and two runs.
Averett went on top 2-0 after a pair of runs in the fifth inning broke a scoreless tie.
James Carter led Averett (17-13) with two RBI after he hit a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to put the game at 4-0.
The Hornets had runners on second and third in the eighth inning but were unable to convert as Mitchell worked his way out of the inning. Sophomore Dan Savage (Ashburn, VA/Paul VI) went 2-3 at the plate for Lynchburg.
Lynchburg (13-11/6-2 ODAC) heads to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon and will return home on Sunday to host the first-ranked team in the nation, Shenandoah University at 1 pm.
