Huge First Half Run Propels LC Women to Win Over Generals
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team defeated the Washington and Lee University Generals 67-57 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, Friday night. The Hornets went on an important run in the first half and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.
With 13:22 left in the first half, LC called their first timeout being down 10-7. However, the Hornets would score the 11 straight points and 20 out of 22. Freshman Shannon Allan hit one three and sophomore Roslyn Alexander added two from downtown. While the Generals tried closing the gap with a three by Kari Ann Pfannenstein, LC's momentum could not be stopped, and the lead expanded to 18.
Washington and Lee cut the lead to 11 after the start of the second half, with a basket from senior Becca Bolton. Back and forth action was the story the rest of the second half, with baskets coming from both teams. The Hornets lead was cut to seven after two free throws from Bolton with 4:21 left. Allan and senior Carly Greenlief put in the next two buckets and gave Lynchburg an 11-point advantage that would prove insurmountable.
A big reason for the Hornets win tonight was their swarming defense. LC held the Generals to 35% shooting, including shutting down reigning ODAC Player of the Week Meg Ingram, who was 2-19, including 1-13 from three, on the night.
Allan and Greenlief tied for the team high with 13 points apiece in the game, and junior Shea Kelley came off the bench to score 10 points and assisted on three others.
Washington and Lee (5-8 overall, 3-5 ODAC) out rebounded LC 42-33, with 20 offensive rebounds. Bolton recorded a double-double with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds in 35 minutes.
Lynchburg (3-9, 2-5) head to Salem, VA on Tuesday for an important ODAC match-up with Roanoke College at 7 p.m.
