Hornet Field Hockey Takes ODAC Lead with 2-0 Win at R-MC
ASHLAND, VA – The 17th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team surged into sole possession of first place in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) standings Wednesday, defeating Randolph-Macon College 2-0.
In a contest that was similar to the Hornets' 2-0 regular-season victory over the Yellow Jackets last fall, LC controlled the game but didn't break through on the scoreboard until the second half of play. Lynchburg out-shot R-MC 27-3 in the first half Wednesday afternoon, but 18 saves from Nicole Woodworth kept LC off the scoreboard.
The Hornets finally broke through at the 55:35 mark of the second half, as senior attack Lindsay Leonard scored an unassisted tally. All-American senior midfielder Shelly Milks tacked on Lynchburg's second goal in the closing seconds, on a feed from sophomore attack Kelsey Link.
Lynchburg junior goalie Hannah Myers made three stops to preserve the shutout, and junior midfielder Ashley Vogan made a defensive save. Woodworth wound up with 25 saves on the day and Renee Greenslade made one defensive save for the Yellow Jackets (7-9/5-1 ODAC).
LC outshot its hosts 41-4 overall and had an advantage of 20-2 in penalty corners.
The Hornets (12-3/6-0 ODAC) host Lebanon Valley College Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in a non-conference match-up as a part of the 2012 Homecoming festivities. LC faces Virginia Wesleyan and Sweet Briar Colleges in ODAC play next week, needing one win to clinch the regular-season conference title and home field advantage in the 2012 ODAC Championship Tournament.
