LC Women's Basketball Controls Boards and Wasps in 80-53 Victory
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team defeated Emory and Henry College 80-53 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Friday night, in a game the Hornets took control of midway through the first half. LC dominated the glass, outrebounding its opponents 43-26, including a 24-7 edge on the offensive side.
LC and the Wasps traded baskets early on in the game, with the Hornets maintaining the largest lead of six points with 9:44 left in the first half. Over the next six minutes, Lynchburg extended the lead thanks to forwards Caitlin Falls and Shannon Allan combining to score nine points. LC then went on to finish the first half on an 11-5 run which pushed the advantage to 15.
The second stanza started in the same manner that the first ended, with the Hornets tallying nine of the first 11 points, pushing the lead to 22. Lynchburg held onto its lead throughout the rest of the half, and finished with a 27-point victory.
All of the players that saw the court for the Hornets scored in the victory, with Allan and Falls leading the way. Allan had 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and three steals for her second straight double-double. Falls contributed 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. Senior Carly Greenlief and sophomore Roslyn Alexander finished in double figures for the Hornets, both tallying 10 points.
The Wasps (2-16 overall, 1-15 ODAC) were led by Michelle Williams and JoBeth Wright. Williams scored 18 and Wright had 11 for Emory and Henry. Freshman Carlyta Hamm added eight points and five boards in only 13 minutes of action Friday night.
The Hornets hosted a Play4Kay Game Friday night in honor of former North Carolina State women's basketball coach Kay Yow. The former coach passed away in 2009 after battling Breast Cancer. During the game, donations were taken throughout the game and a raffle was held at halftime in which the winner received a pink golf bag and golf balls. It is a nationwide effort to raise awareness and resources to combat this form of cancer.
Lynchburg (8-14, 7-10) continues its ODAC slate with a tough match-up Saturday afternoon against Guilford College. Seniors Greenlief, Falls, Katie Crump, and Allyson Cannella will be honored before the game, which starts at 4 p.m.
