Lynchburg Baseball Sweeps Roanoke in Doubleheader

SALEM, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team pulled off a sweep of Roanoke College on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play, extending its winning streak to seven games. Lynchburg won the first game 12-5 and the second 4-2.

In the first game, senior Richard Palase and junior Michael Del Buono each had two RBI to lead the Hornets. LC piled on the offense, scoring a run in each frame except the seventh and racked up 17 hits.

Palase and sophomore Zach Fitzpatrick each crossed the plate in the first inning to give LC the 2-0 lead. Roanoke answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. Fitzpatrick drove in a run in the second for the 3-1 lead, but the Maroons put up another score in the inning. Freshman Pat Harris doubled in a run in the third while Roanoke came back with two, knotting the game at four.

Junior Michael Kenah scored on a passed ball in the fourth, while Palase homered in the fifth, driving in two. Sophomore Dustin Arrowood drove in a run in the sixth as well. Leading 8-4 in the seventh, Roanoke scored, but LC closed out the eighth and ninth innings with two runs in each frame, winning 12-5.

Senior Robert Garrett started the game for LC, giving up four hits and three earned runs. Freshman Brandon Miller earned the win with six innings of solid pitching, relinquishing just one run and striking out seven.

Ryne Farmer took the loss for Roanoke on the hill.

In the second game, Fitzpatrick started the scoring in the first with a double to right, scoring Palase. Harris singled in a run in the second while junior Dan Savage drove in Kenah to put LC up 3-0 in the top of the third.

Roanoke put up a run in the bottom of the third but LC scored in the top of the sixth off a double from Harris. The Maroons threatened in the bottom of the ninth by adding a run, but Lynchburg closed out the game, winning 4-2.

Freshman Matt Outman got the start before giving way to the bullpen. Both freshmen Charlie Thieringer and Martin Henderlite threw scoreless innings. Sophomore Michael Mansfield pitched the ninth, closing out the game.

Michael Haslam earned the loss for Roanoke (12-16/3-5 ODAC).

Lynchburg (22-6/8-2 ODAC) hosts Hampden-Sydney College next Tuesday on Fox Field at 3 p.m.
