Lynchburg Baseball Falls to Salisbury 7-2 in NCAA Regional

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – The second-seeded Salisbury University baseball team defeated Lynchburg College 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon in game two of the NCAA South Regional. Lynchburg faces host Christopher Newport University on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the double-elimination tournament.

Andrew Levy of Salisbury pitched the complete game, limiting the Hornets to two hits while inducing 15 fly ball outs.

Salisbury posted the game's first run in the bottom of the first off a single from Johnny Griffith who was thrown out on the play at second, ending the frame.

Leading off the second inning, junior Michael Del Buono drew a walk, followed by a single from junior Dan Savage, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Sophomore Dustin Arrowood singled down the left field line, tying the game at one. After a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Zach Fitzpatrick, junior Ashton Paige hit a sacrifice fly to score a run, putting LC up 2-1.

The Seagulls put up four runs in the bottom of the inning, only one of which was earned. Leading 5-2, Salisbury added a run on the bottom of the fourth off a short single from Joey Jones.

Freshman Charlie Thieringer replaced senior Robert Garrett on the mound in the fourth. Thieringer pitched for a total of four and a third innings, giving up just three hits and one run.

Salisbury posted another run in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the advantage to 7-2. Levy limited the base runners for LC, cruising through the rest of the game.

Jones led the Seagulls with three RBI, going 3-3 on the day. Levy picked up his sixth win of the season.

Salisbury (32-7) moves on to play the winner of Shenandoah University and Rowan University.

Lynchburg (34-9) plays first-seeded Christopher Newport University (30-8) in game four on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. The loser will be eliminated from the tournament, while the winner will move on to play Friday in game nine.
