LC Women Come Back for 60-50 Win over Generals

LEXINGTON, VA—The Lynchburg College women's basketball team was down one point at halftime, but an eight point run that spanned the break led the Hornets to a 60-50 win over Washington & Lee University on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Hornets were down 22-19 with 1:30 left in the first half when the 8-0 run started. Sophomore Shannon Allan scored just her second basket of the first twenty minutes when she knocked down a jumper in the paint to cut the lead to one at the break. A pair of layups by sophomore Lauren Penley sandwiched a jumper by sophomore Katie Reeves, giving LC the lead, 27-22 with 17:16 remaining.

The Generals stayed in the game, matching LC basket for basket most of the second half thanks to senior Katy Wilson. The Hornets kept switching defenders in the post, trying to keep a fresh post player on the leading scorer for W&L. Wilson was relied on heavily after the Generals' second leading scorer, Alena Hamrick, did not return following an injury in the first half.

Senior Megan Marks and freshman Paige Corvino knocked down three three-pointers each in the game, but defense from junior Ann Dorris kept W&L's sharp shooters at bay allowing LC to maintain the five point lead created by the early run.

Freshman Chaney Forbush had another big game to extend the Hornet lead to as much as 11 points, 49-38, in the second half. Forbush scored all but three of her game-high 16 points in the second half.

Allan and Penley joined Forbush in double-figures with 14 and 10 points respectively. Allan had a game-high seven assists. Penley contributed a team-leading nine boards. Forbush added seven rebounds.

Wilson led Washington & Lee (5-5/2-2 ODAC) with 14 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the year. Marks and Corvino each had nine points for the Generals.

Lynchburg (8-4/3-1 ODAC) is now in a five-way tie for first place in the conference. The Hornets will travel on Wednesday, January 9, to take on Roanoke College (4-8/2-3 ODAC) for a 7 p.m. start.
