Venegas' Goal Lifts LC to 2-1 Win over Roanoke in OT
ROANOKE, VA – Senior Michael Venegas scored a header goal late in the second overtime period as the Lynchburg College men's soccer team defeated Roanoke College 2-1 on Tuesday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The win extends the Hornet winning streak to four games.
The Hornets got on the board early in the game when freshman Richard Cann Perez scored a goal into the left of the net off of a cross from Venegas at 26:25. Both defenses clamped down for the rest of the first half, and Lynchburg went into halftime on top 1-0.
The Maroons came out strong in the second half and tied the game at 1-1 when Jackson Goyette headed the ball into the back of the net off of an assist by Christopher Fisher. The rest of regulation was scoreless, with both defenses stepping up.
Defense remained a constant in overtime, until LC finally broke through with an answer. Venegas scored at 107:18 in the second period of overtime with an assist coming from freshman Cory Budka to win the game 2-1.
Senior Jonathan Sheffield played all 107:18 in goal for the Hornets and recorded four saves, while Roanoke keeper Cole Sinclair also saved four balls. The Maroons (9-6-2/5-4-2 ODAC) had a 15-12 shot advantage and led in corner kicks 8-4.
Lynchburg (10-5-2/8-2-1 ODAC) will be back in action for the ODAC Tournament Saturday at home in a time that is to be determined.
