Hornet Women Advance 83-70 over Randolph in ODAC Tournament

LYNCHBURG, VA – The fifth-seeded Lynchburg College women's basketball team defeated a pesky Randolph College squad Monday evening 83-70 in the first round of the 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship Tournament.  The Hornets advance into the second round, where LC will face #4 Bridgewater College Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center.

The game was a historic one for LC, giving Lynchburg 17 wins on the season, the most for the program since the 1989-90 campaign (18-7).

Lynchburg led by as many as seven in the first half and held a 40-36 edge at halftime. A 12-0 run early in the second half put LC ahead 54-38 with 16 minutes left to play, but the WildCats fought back late in the contest to trail by just six (69-63). Lynchburg sealed the win from the free-throw line, scoring its last eight points from the charity stripe.

Sophomore forward Shannon Allan scored a game-high 21 points, and added seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Freshman forward Chaney Forbush continued her recent strong play with 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while sophomore forward Lauren Penley had 15 points and five rebounds. Sophomore guard Katie Reeves added eight points, six rebounds and five assists and junior guard Ann Dorris also scored eight points.

Freshman guard Abigail Bullins scored a career-high 34 points for Randolph (5-21), eclipsing her old career-best by 12. She hit 8-of-14 of her three point attempts, including five in the first half. Chelsea Tyler had 14 points for the WildCats. The Hornets shot 55 percent (28-51) from the field, while Randolph was accurate from beyond the three-point arc (47% - 9-of-19).

The conference tournament win is also the Hornet program's first since the 1989-90 season. The winner of the Lynchburg/Bridgewater game Thursday advances into the tournament semifinals to play Saturday at 1 p.m. For complete tournament information, including updated brackets, match-ups, game times, directions and tickets, please visit the ODAC Championship website here: http://www.odaconline.com/tournament/winter/basketball/2013tournament/021613-wbb-tourneyseeds
