Sophomore Henderlite Leads Hornets to Doubleheader Split of York (Pa.) College

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team rode the arm of sophomore Martin Henderlite in game two to split the doubleheader with York (Pa.) College, dropping game one 7-4, before winning the second game 3-0.

Lynchburg had its hands full in the first game against the Spartans as York was able to get to Hornet sophomore starter Brandon Miller. York scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings off the Hornet ace to take an early 4-0 lead.

The Spartans utilized small ball in the second inning, with a bunt attempt and sacrifice flies following a single by Colin Porter. Dustin Worthman reached on his bunt single to third before a wild pitch and back-to-back sacrifices staked the Spartans to a 2-0 lead.

York tagged Miller for two more runs in the fourth before the Hornets answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Michael Kenah singled in front of a double by senior Brock Shiflett. Senior Dan Savage took advantage of the RBI opportunity, smashing a double to deep right-center field to plate both Hornets. Miller managed to strike out the side in the fifth before exiting in the sixth.

Sacrifice flies from junior Jake Tanner and Shiflett plated the other two LC runs.

Kenah and Shiflett each had two hits in game one for the Hornets. Sophomore Charlie Thieringer made his season debut with three hitless innings in relief.

The pitching performance by Thieringer in game one carried over to game two with Henderlite taking the mound for Lynchburg.

After retiring the side in order on two strikeouts and a groundout to second, the Hornet offense stepped in and did some early damage.

York starter David Walker set down senior Ashton Paige and sophomore Lincoln Evans before Kenah singled to left. Shiflett tripled over the right fielder's head to score Kenah, and came home during the at bat to Savage on a wild pitch for the early 2-0 Hornet lead after one inning.

Henderlite continued to dominate the Spartan lineup, striking out five York hitters while allowing two hits through the first four. The last Spartan hit occurred in the fourth inning on a single by Adam Bartholomew as Henderlite retired the next 16 batters to close out the contest.

The Hornets provided some additional insurance in the seventh inning when sophomore Wil Parsons, working with two outs, walked. Parsons stole second before a single up the middle by Paige plated the third Hornet run of the game.

Henderlite finished his first career complete game with two hits allowed, two walks, and nine strikeouts. Paige and Shiflett each contributed an RBI in game two while Paige led the Hornets with two hits.

Lynchburg (4-4) will play Immaculata University (1-1) on Monday, February 25. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
