Cold Weather Freezes Bats as Hornets Drop Doubleheader to W&L

LEXINGTON, VA—The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener did not go the way of the Lynchburg College baseball team as the Hornets were shut down by Washington and Lee University, dropping a pair 6-3 and 3-2.

Lynchburg got on the board first in game one thanks to a homerun by senior Michael Kenah in the third inning. Kenah managed to connect against General starting pitcher Ian Shaw, sending the pitch deep over the left field fence for his first long ball of the season.

Sophomore Brandon Miller kept Washington and Lee in check through four innings with the benefit of a caught stealing and a pick off, allowing him to work around six hits and a walk, to maintain a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth.

Washington and Lee tagged Miller for three runs in the fifth before Lynchburg plated one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Joe Rogers to make the score 3-2.

The Generals scored three more unanswered runs, making a Hornet rally in the ninth more challenging. Junior Jake Tanner reached with one out, moving to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Pat Harris walked and a single by Kenah brought home Tanner, but the Hornets would not do any additional damage as Washington and Lee went to closer Jake Rudolph.

Kenah led the Hornets in game one with a 2-for-4 day, including a homer and two RBI. Tomasulo added two hits for LC.

The cold weather was synonymous with the cold Lynchburg bats in game two. The Generals squeezed three runs out of Lynchburg sophomore starter Martin Henderlite, although only two of those runs were earned off the reigning member of D3baseball.com's National Team of the Week.

The Hornets got on the board in the top of the sixth inning to chase General starter Nate Plein. Senior Dan Savage reached on a one out fielder's choice in front of junior Dustin Arrowood. The junior doubled to deep left-center, scoring Savage. Following a foul out, sophomore Rob Tomasulo blooped a single into left that scored Arrowood, cutting the deficit to one run, 3-2.

Lynchburg (6-6/0-2) was led in game two by two hits apiece from Kenah and Arrowood.

The starting pitchers for Washington and Lee (7-4/2-0) held the Hornets to four runs on 11 hits over 12 innings of work.

Lynchburg returns home to take on Averett University (13-3) on Tuesday in non-conference action. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
