LC uses Long Ball to Sweep Emory & Henry

EMORY, VA—The Lynchburg College baseball team used the benefit of three homeruns to take a doubleheader against Emory & Henry, 4-2 and 11-2, on Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.

Emory & Henry scored first on Saturday, but a triple by Lynchburg sophomore Joe Rogers plated senior Brock Shiflett in the second inning to knot the game, 1-1.

LC pulled away in the fourth inning, courtesy of a leadoff homer from Shiflett, followed by a walk to junior Dustin Arrowood. Sophomore Lincoln Evans drove the ball into right field but an error brought both Arrowood and Evans home for the 4-1 advantage. The error ended a streak of hits in five straight at bats for Evans.

Sophomore Martin Henderlite (3-1) gave up one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work while striking out five. Sophomore Charlie Thieringer closed out the final 2 2/3 innings for his first save of the season.

Lynchburg did not wait long to get on the board in game two, as Shiflett connected on a two-run homer in the first inning, his second of the day and the season, to give the Hornets an early 2-0 lead.  The Wasps answered with a run in the bottom half, before LC pulled away in the fourth.

Sophomore Pat Harris was hit by an inside pitch to start the inning. Following a double by sophomore Jay Kenyon, junior Jake Tanner raised a ball to center field, scoring Harris on the sacrifice fly. Three straight singles by Evans, senior Michael Kenah, and senior Dan Savage plated two more runs for LC. Emory & Henry intentionally walked Shiflett and a run-scoring wild pitch and batter later, junior Dustin Arrowood crushed a grand slam, making the score 10-1.

Sophomore Brandon Miller (2-3) pitched his third complete game of the season, surrendering one earned run on six hits. He did not allow a walk, while striking out six.

Shiflett, Evans, Kenah, and Savage each had three hits on the day for the Hornets. Shiflett added four runs scored while Arrowood contributed four RBI.

Jordan Woullard and Bransen Christopher had three hits each for Emory & Henry (6-8/1-3).

Lynchburg (8-7/2-2) travels to Methodist University (8-11) for a non-conference matchup Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
