Roanoke Works Around LC Offense as Hornets fall 6-3

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team had its opportunities, but stranded 17 runners on base in a 6-3 defeat to Roanoke College Wednesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action.

The Hornets looked primed to do big things, scoring early in the second inning off several Maroon misplays in the field. Already trailing 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the second, Matt Matthews reached on a fielding error by the Roanoke shortstop. Jake Tanner followed with a single to center field, scoring along with Matthews on a two-RBI double by Lincoln Evans. Joe Rogers capped off the scoring when a deep fly ball was dropped to score Evans for the 3-1 Lynchburg lead.

The Maroons tried to rally in the third inning with runners on the corners and one out, but the Hornets went to the bullpen, bringing in Charlie Thieringer. The sophomore, Thieringer, struck out the next two batters to escape the jam.

Roanoke got to Thieringer in the fourth, scoring on RBI hits from Andrew Peterson, Reece Kingery, and Brian Kluge for a 5-3 advantage. The Maroons would tack on one more run in the seventh on an RBI-single by Matt Manthe.

LC fought back from the seventh inning on, but Roanoke forced the Hornets to strand two runners each in the seventh and eighth innings, and the bases loaded in the ninth for the victory.

Lynchburg was led by Michael Kenah's 3-for-6 day while Pat Harris came off the bench for a 2-for-2 day.

Jacob McMillan got the win for the Maroons (13-18/6-9 ODAC) giving up three unearned runs in four innings of work.

Lynchburg (17-14-1/7-7-1 ODAC) travels to #25-ranked Shenandoah University (19-7/10-6 ODAC) Saturday for an ODAC doubleheader at noon.
