Hornets Hold another Scoreless while Continuing Winning Streak
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Lynchburg College women's soccer team notched its ninth-straight shutout, defeating Salem College 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The sixth-ranked Hornets also managed to stay perfect with the win, remaining as one of only six teams in the nation without a loss.
SC tallied the first shot on goal of the day, forcing Tess Frelick to make an early stop, but it would be all Lynchburg afterwards. Less than one minute after Frelick's stop, Marina Clark scored at 6:30 to give LC the 1-0 lead. While there were no more scores throughout the rest of the half, the Hornets kept Spirits goalkeeper Richi Hutchins busy, as she made seven saves. Frelick did not see another shot in the stanza.
Both teams came out of the intermission slowly, as neither team registered anything on goal for almost the first ten minutes. In the 55th minute, Lynchburg came alive with a barrage of four shots on net, one by Jade Woll, two by Dessi Dupuy, and one by Angela Bosco.
Finally in the 61st minute, LC broke through for its second of the day. Morgan Singer scored off an assist from Gabbiy Soares. The Hornets then tallied their final goal of the afternoon in the 68th minute, as Samantha Bagherpour scored for the third time in five games. It would be the last of the fireworks for the game.
Hutchins made 15 saves for the Spirits (11-3 overall) in the loss on Sunday. LC controlled all aspects of the game, outshooting Salem 26-4 and earning nine more corner kicks throughout the entire game. Once again, Frelick and the defenders did their part in preserving the shutout. The Hornets defense is currently ranked second in the nation in goals against average, at a miniscule .165 percentage.
The Hornets (14-0) finish their three-game road trip on Wednesday night, with an Old Dominion Athletic Conference clash at Guilford College. Kickoff time is 6 p.m.
