Hornets Advance in ODAC Tournament with 68-64 win over Roanoke

SALEM, VA – The third-seeded Lynchburg College women's basketball team held on Thursday night for a 68-64 win over #6 Roanoke College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament Quarterfinal Game held at the Salem Civic Center. It is the second-straight trip for LC to the tournament semifinals.

The Hornets started the game strong, making their first three shots and a pair of free throws for a quick 9-0 lead. Roanoke rallied to cut the edge to 15-12 with 11:32 left in the first after a layup by ODAC Player of the Year Paxton Gwin. LC was able to extend the lead to 35-24 before intermission, thanks to freshman Charmaine Hairston's 12 points in 12 minutes off the bench. She hit five of her eight shots, including two three-pointers.

Another 9-0 surge to start the second half set LC up with a commanding 44-24 advantage just two minutes in. But Roanoke once again cut into the lead with a 10-0 run to keep within striking distance. Roanoke trailed just 55-49 with five minutes left, but a huge three-pointer by Shannon Allan pushed the lead to nine. Allan sank all six of her free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

Allan finished with 16 points to tie for the game high, and added five rebounds and two blocked shots. Hairston tallied 15 points with three three-pointers and Katie Reeves posted 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Chaney Forbush had eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots and Caleigh Patterson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Laurel Hawkins netted 16 points for Roanoke (13-13), and Gwin had 12. Tatum McKee had the games' only double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals.

The Hornets (16-10) will play Saturday at 3 p.m. against #2 seed Randolph-Macon College, a 96-91 winner over Virginia Wesleyan College earlier in the evening.
