No. 19 Hornet Field Hockey Unable to Hold On in Season Opener
DOVER, DE – The No. 19 Lynchburg College field hockey team scored the first goal of the season, but allowed two tallies late to fall to Wesley College 2-1 in non-conference, double-overtime, action Saturday afternoon.
The first half was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to put the ball in the back of the cage. Wesley outshot the Hornets in the first 35 minutes, 4-2, while all four shots were on point. Beka Hess, making her first career start, turned away all four to keep the Wolverines off the scoreboard.
It did not take long for the Hornets to assume control of the game in the second half as Courtney Gillette found Kelsey Link off a penalty corner for the first, and only, Lynchburg lead. Wesley's Lauren Mears countered the goal by Link at 51:44 off a Morgan Seymour penalty corner.
The goalie duo of Sarah Daniels and Kayla Fromal kept the Hornets at bay the remainder of regular, combining for 12 saves in the second half. Daniels added three more saves in each of the overtime periods to allow time for Meghan Groom to find Gracie Daniels on a breakaway to win the game.
Daniels made 12 saves in total for the Wolverines (1-0) while Fromal added four. In total, Wesley had an 18-5 advantage in saves.
The Hornets led 29-14 in shots and 17-11 in penalty corners.
Hess made four saves for Lynchburg (0-1).
#19 Lynchburg travels to Swarthmore College (0-1) Sunday afternoon for a 1:30 p.m. start.
