Hornet Rally Falls Short as #2 Salisbury Defeats LC 4-1
LYNCHBURG, VA – No. 2 Salisbury University scored the first four goals of Saturday's non-conference field hockey match, but Lynchburg College scored in the final minute to ruin the Sea Gulls shutout bid.
Defense controlled the first half as Lynchburg's Beka Hess made three saves in goal for the Hornets, allowing a lone goal by Mallory Elliott that came off a Samantha Johnson penalty corner.
Lynchburg had an opportunity as Elaine Ritschard ripped a shot as Sea Gull keeper Rachel Clewer was caught out of position, but Breck Sullivan made the defensive stop to preserve the one-goal lead.
Salisbury took advantage of another penalty corner situation 13 minutes into the second half as Johnson found Elliott again. This time, instead of taking the shot, Elliott passed it back to Johnson who notched the score.
Salisbury held a 20-4 advantage on penalty corners, but was only able to convert the previous two into goals.
Summer Washburn found Natalie Wilkinson at 51:24 before scoring an unassisted goal at 65:33 to take a 4-0 lead.
LC got on the board with 18 seconds remaining in the game as Courtney Gillette found Taylor Quillen in the circle. Quillen spun around her defender and stick poked the ball past Clewer for the score.
Lynchburg turned away a late attempt by Salisbury for a fifth goal when Kayla Krause dove in front of the cage and slapped the ball away with her stick.
Salisbury (7-0) maintained a 26-3 advantage in shots to go along with the advantage in penalty corners.
Lynchburg (3-5) travels to the No. 19 University of Mary Washington (7-1) for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference start on Wednesday.
