Hornet Field Hockey Upsets #16 Mary Washington 3-2
FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College field hockey team scored a 3-2 upset victory Wednesday at The University of Mary Washington, ranked #16 this week in Division III in non-conference play.
The Eagles opened the scoring just 3:20 into play with a goal from Kathleen Namey on an assist from Carlee Budd. LC answered quickly with a tally off the stick of freshman Elaine Ritschard at the 8:21 mark. The Hornets took the lead midway through the first half when Catherine Rogerson found Karissa LeMaire, but UMW countered with a Jenna Steele goal before intermission to tie the score at 2-2 heading into the break.
Senior Kelsey Link delivered the goal-ahead goal 10 minutes after halftime to give Lynchburg a 3-2 edge and the defense held on for the upset victory. Courtney Gillette made a defense save for the Hornets.
Beka Hess made five saves in net for LC to preserve the victory. UMW outshot LC 12-7 and held a 24-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Hornets (4-5) travel to York College (PA) for another non-conference game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
