Dupuy Ties All-Time Goal Record as #19 Hornets Upset #5 Johns Hopkins

SALEM, VA – Senior Dessi Dupuy's late header kept the No. 19 Lynchburg College women's soccer team in the match where an Angela Bosco goal netted a 2-1 double overtime victory over No. 5 Johns Hopkins University at the Roanoke Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The late score ties Dupuy atop the all-time goals leaderboard. Her 79 equal the total posted by 1999 Lynchburg graduate Karen O'Connor.

Lynchburg applied the pressure early against Johns Hopkins as Samantha Bagherpour ripped a shot from outside the box that was pulled in by Clara Aranguren just over a minute into the match.

Two minutes later Lynchburg had another opportunity after turning away a Blue Jay corner Kick. Dessi Dupuy found an opening, but again Aranguren was there for the save.

It only took two shots for Johns Hopkins to take the lead as Amanda Masse found Maryalice McKenna thirty yards out. McKenna sent the ball over the defensive line where it curled into the upper right corner of the goal past the outstretched arm of Tess Frelick.

Scoring opportunities abounded in the first half, but the defensive efforts of each goalkeeper kept the score at 1-0 heading into intermission. Frelick made a pair of saves while Aranguren had six stops in the first 45 minutes.

Both defenses increased the intensity in the second half, not allowing either offense to gain momentum.

Lynchburg fought for one last opportunity in regulation as Marina Clark had the ball on her foot with 34 seconds remaining. She sent a ball across the box where Dupuy got her head on it, sending it past Aranguren to knot the game at one.

Johns Hopkins had a great scoring chance two minutes into the first overtime period as Sydney Teng got in behind the defense, but Frelick saved the ball for Lynchburg to extend the match.

Lynchburg had the opportunity two minutes into the second overtime and would convert as Bosco sent the ball into the left corner of the goal to finish the comeback.

#5 Johns Hopkins (2-2) maintained an 11-10 advantage in shots although the Hornets put eight on goal as opposed to four by the Blue Jays.

#19 Lynchburg (3-0) will complete play at the Roanoke Tournament against Franklin & Marshall College Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
