#10 Field Hockey Comes Back to Knock off Frostburg St. 5-1
LYNCHBURG, VA – The 10th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team fought back from an early deficit to win 5-1 over Frostburg State University in non-conference action on Monday night.
The Bobcats' lone goal was scored in the 10th minute of play when Jackie Best tapped one in on a one-on-one opportunity.
It took the Hornets 15 minutes to answer by means of a penalty stroke from Nikki Simpao. She knocked down her third stroke of the season, making her a perfect 3-3 on the year. Simpao scored once more for LC when Lacey Elliott centered the ball to assist the freshman attack and give the Hornets a 2-1 edge before the break.
Lynchburg carried that momentum into the second half, scoring three times in the remaining 35 minutes of play. Elliott dished another cross to Kayla Copeman for a goal at 39:24. Six minutes later Morgan Lammando gained brief possession of a loose ball in front of the cage and shot one by the keeper to increase the Hornet lead to three. Then at 62:24, Sydney Rampey assisted freshman Isabella Eldridge to add the game's final tally, making it 5-1.
The home team had advantages over the Bobcats in shots (26-9) and penalty corners (11-7). Beka Hess made five saves in goal for LC, while Sarah Suter stepped in to finish off the competition. The Hornet defense swarmed all night long to hold the Capital Athletic Conference's leading goal-scorer, Alexandra Darrow, scoreless.
Frostburg (7-5) goalkeeper Jackie Gover made 10 stops while Emma Wade registered a pair of defensive saves for the Bobcats.
Lynchburg (10-2, 2-1) will resume Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon when Virginia Wesleyan College travels to Shellenberger Field for a 1 p.m. start as a part of Homecoming weekend.
