#12 Field Hockey Falls 2-1 to #5 Salisbury
NEWPORT NEWS, VA – In a battle of top-ranked non-conference opponents, the 12th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team was edged 2-1 in a hard-fought battle against #5 Salisbury University in neutral site competition held at Christopher Newport University Monday night.
Salisbury's Casie Preisch connected with Sam Johnson following a penalty corner in the 12th minute of play to put the Sea Gulls up front 1-0.
Lynchburg answered two minutes before halftime on a short corner situation when Nikki Simpao pushed in a shot in from the top of the circle and into the net to even the score 1-1.
In the second half, the Sea Gulls scored again when Courtney Jantzen assisted Hannah Miller for the go-ahead tally at the 44:16 mark. The Hornets were unable to respond this time, despite seven second half penalty corners, as Miller's goal eventually proved to be the game-winner when the final horn sounded.
In a contest that was neck and neck the whole way, the Hornets led in penalty corners 12-7 and Beka Hess made eight stops in goal to lead the defense.
Salisbury (9-2) had the edge over LC in shots 17-11 while goalkeeper Tressie Windsor saved four.
Lynchburg (11-3) has one day to rest before traveling to take on Ferrum College on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
