#10 Hornet Field Hockey Falls 3-1 to W&L

LEXINGTON, VA – Washington and Lee University knocked off the 10th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team 3-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets' loss to the Generals marks the first time Lynchburg has lost an ODAC competition since September 19, 2008, when they were beaten by Eastern Mennonite University.

It didn't take long for LC to get on the board, scoring just three minutes into play.  Nicole Simpao found Catherine Rogerson for the tally to give the Hornets the early lead.  That 1-0 margin for the visitors would remain for the rest of the first half.

It took a great effort from the Generals to overcome their deficit to the nine-time defending ODAC champions.  Ten minutes into the second half W&L scored two quick unassisted goals from the sticks of Kendall Bernard and Haley Tucker within the span of a minute and a half to assume the lead.  Bernard would score again at the 62:58 mark on a one-on-one opportunity to increase the lead 3-1 and give the home squad a more comfortable edge with minutes remaining.

Beka Hess made four saves in goal for the Hornets, and the Generals' keeper Ariyel Yavalar matched that.  LC led in shots (13-11) while W&L led in penalty corners (6-3).  

With the win, Washington and Lee holds a 1-0 record in the ODAC and a 5-5 record overall.

The Hornets (8-1, 1-1) have plenty to look forward to with most of its conference schedule still ahead of them.  Lynchburg will have an opportunity to bounce back Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Bridgewater College.
