#10 Field Hockey Falls to Rhodes College 3-2 in OT
SEWANEE, TN – Rhodes College defeated the 10th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team 3-2 in overtime at a neutral site, non-conference game held at Sewanee: The University of the South on Friday afternoon.
The Lynx scored two minutes into the game when Christina Difelice found Alex Friedman to take a 1-0 lead early in the contest.
It took the Hornets 20 minutes to tie the score 1-1, which they did on a penalty corner opportunity. Nikki Simpao assisted Alyssa Mills in front of the cage for the equalizer.
Rhodes scored once more as Julie Hertzman assisted teammate Lauren Travis moments before halftime, going into the break with a 2-1 lead.
Freshman forward Kayla Copeman scored in the 53rd minute of play to tie the game again for LC. The 2-2 score would last through the final 17 minutes, forcing Lynchburg into its third overtime game of the season.
Seven-on-seven play would be reduced to a seven-on-five disadvantage for the Hornets after they received yellow and green cards in the period of extra play. The Lynx capitalized on the opportunity, scoring seven minutes in off a goal from Mary Rose Hazel.
Rhodes (7-4) held advantages in all offensive categories including shots (23-13, 12-8 on goal) and penalty corners (13-7), while forcing Lynchburg keeper Beka Hess to make seven saves on the afternoon. Laura Eckelkamp made five saves in goal for Rhodes. LC suffered from two yellow and two green cards throughout the match, totaling in 14 minutes of penalty time over 77 total minutes of play.
Lynchburg (9-2, 2-1) returns to its home turf next week, hosting Frostburg State on Monday at 6 p.m.
