Chaney Forbush Scores 20 to Lift LC Women to 69-60 win at EMU
HARRISONBURG, VA – Senior forward Chaney Forbush scored a team-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds to lift the Lynchburg College women's basketball team to a 69-60 win at Eastern Mennonite Tuesday evening.
The Hornets successfully opened up the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) portion of their schedule with the victory and handed EMU its first loss to an ODAC opponent at home since February 11, 2012. LC was voted #1 in a pre-season poll of the league's coaches, while the Royals came in at #2.
Forbush played 38 of the game's 40 minutes and shot 6-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line and added two blocks. Sophomore front-court mate Caroline Naumann delivered 15 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while senior point guard Sammi Goldsmith had 11 points and six assists. Olivia DeFrancesco posted 13 points and four assists and Madison Steele had eight points. Only eight Hornets received playing time as coach Abby Smith tightened the rotation in the important early-season conference clash.
Jess Rheinheimer, the 2014-15 All-ODAC and All-State Player of the Year and a pre-season first-team All-American, scored a game-high 23 points for EMU. Myneshia Walker put 14 points on the scoreboard and Lindsey Krisak added 10. The Hornet defense forced Rheinheimer to shoot the ball 23 times en route to her game-high point total with no trips to the free-throw line.
LC broke open a tie game late in the second period with an 11-2 run to close out the first half and take a 39-30 lead. Steele had five points in the surge and Forbush added four. The Hornets assumed a double-digit advantage in the third quarter and held an eight-point lead or more the rest of the way.
Lynchburg (3-2/1-0 ODAC) hosts Ferrum College Monday in non-conference action at 7 p.m. EMU falls to 3-2 and 0-1 in league play.
