Bridgewater Edges Lynchburg FH in ODAC Semifinals 2-1 in OT Heartbreaker
LEXINGTON, VA – The second-seeded Lynchburg College field hockey team was edged by #3 Bridgewater College 2-1 in overtime Friday night in Old Dominion Athletic Conference ODAC) semifinal action held at top-seeded Washington and Lee University.
BC (11-8) is the first team that has been able to knock the Hornets out of ODAC tournament play in almost a decade, ending a nine-year streak of conference championships by LC (15-4).
The game was a battle from start to finish as both teams fought to keep their seasons alive and move on to Saturday's championship.
Lynchburg earned a penalty corner as time expired in the first half, earning them an untimed opportunity right before the break. The Hornets capitalized as Nikki Simpao found Lacey Elliott to put LC up 1-0.
The Eagles even the score when Taylor Prillaman scored by moving the ball around the Lynchburg defense in the 45th minute.
Both teams went back and forth trading opportunities on goal. The second half and overtime featured fantastic goalkeeper play that included diving saves from Lynchburg's Beka Hess and Bridgewater's Marisa Sims. The defensive efforts for both squads forced overtime. The Eagles' Caroline Fletcher found Allison Kirk for the game-winning goal deep in the period of extra play.
In goal, Hess finished with seven saves and Sims ended the night with eight. The Eagles will face W&L Saturday at 5 p.m. for the ODAC crown.
Lynchburg, ranked #15 in NCAA Division III, awaits a possible at large bid to the national tournament.
