Hornets Barrage Quakers with 13-4 Victory
GREENSBORO, NC – Austin Stewart scored six goals, and two other members of the No. 10 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team notched multiple goals to help defeat Guilford College 13-4. The first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest of the year helped the Hornets end a two-game skid.
With the exception of a brief two minute period during the first quarter, the Hornets controlled the first half. Chris Cornelius started the action with a goal off a pass from Dane Angell. LC added to the lead after a Quaker penalty at 6:12, as Stewart ripped a shot from deep off a quick pass from Cornelius. A few minutes later, Stewart added to his and the Hornets' total, putting the score at 3-0 to end the first.
After both teams failed to get on the board early in the second, Guilford took a LC shot and fired a pass to Cam Davis. Davis found space and cut the deficit to 3-1. At the 9:35 mark, Daniel Haupt connected on a shot to bring the Lynchburg lead to one. But that would be as close as the Quakers would get.
Stewart capped off his hat trick at 4:57, which set off a quick barrage of Hornet goals. Guilford was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty, and Lynchburg scored in similar fashion as the previous man-up situation, this time with Aaron Murphy assisting Stewart. Bobby Distler then won the ensuing faceoff, sprinted down and fed Murphy who finished the third goal at 4:04.
Right before the half, LC added one more as a quick fast break saw Stewart finish off a Cullan Ganley pass to put LC up 7-2 at the intermission.
The third quarter followed the script of the last five minutes. Murphy added his second, followed by a quick strike from Jacob Fuller off a Murphy assist. At 9:47, Stewart fired home his fifth of the game, taking the pass from Colin McGuire. Fresh off the assist, McGuire then put the score at 11-2 at 4:28 with a tally of his own. McGuire then added his second of the evening at 12:36 of the fourth quarter.
GC added another tally during the fourth, but McGuire finished off his first career trifecta to put the lead back at ten. McGuire caught a pass from Murphy on the man advantage to put the score at 13-3. Guilford would add a final goal with 27 seconds, but to no avail.
Rufus Terry caused five turnovers for Guilford (3-1 overall/0-1 ODAC). Thomas Deane made 10 saves in the loss. The Quakers outshot the Hornets 40-35, but LC landed more on net (23-16).
Lynchburg (3-2/1-0 ODAC) continues its five-game road trip with two neutral site games next weekend. The Hornets will head to the second annual Mustang Classic, hosted by Stevenson University. LC will play SUNY-Cortland (2-2) in the tourney opener, Friday at 5:30 p.m.
