Hornets Stunned by Last Chance Goal
GETTYSBURG, PA – Robby Maddux scored with just seven seconds left to give the #17 Gettysburg College Bullets a 7-6 victory over the #3 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team on Sunday. The top-20 matchup provided back and forth action throughout.
Unlike the previous two matchups between these two powerhouses, the first three quarters proved to be a feeling out period. The Bullets were the first to get on the board with at the 12:23 mark off a shot by Maddux. Each defense and goalie took over after that initial goal. Both teams maintained their share of possession but neither team could find the back of the net.
The next period began the same way the previous ended, with both defenses keeping the opposing offenses off the score sheet. At 7:38, Jameson Smith went top-right to give GC a 2-0 lead. However, two minutes later, the Hornets responded. Todd Galvin hit Colin McGuire with a pass on the right side of the crease. McGuire then fired high and to the left for his first goal of the game.
LC held possession for a large portion of the remainder of the half, but had a goal taken away due to crease interference. Gettysburg came back down, but was thwarted by an impressive save by Chris Hawley, keeping the game2-1 at the half.
After the intermission, the Hornets solved the stingy GC defense just four minutes in. Austin Stewart scored to tie the game up at 11:08. Maddux responded at 9:29 for his second to put the Bullets up by one.
After a series of turnovers, LC tied it up once more off an incredible individual effort by Galvin. Galvin worked his way through three defenders on the right side of the field before firing one into the top left corner for his first of the day. After both teams had several chances to the end the quarter, the score would remain tied going into the fourth.
In the fourth, the Hornets finally took the lead. Aaron Murphy set a pick for Dane Angell on the left side, and Angell used that space for a deep rocket to the back of the net. As has been the case between these two teams, the Bullets once more responded, tying the score at four-all off a shot by Paul Werner.
Werner then set an illegal screen after the Bullets won the ensuing faceoff, and went to the box for it. LC capitalized on the man-up as Galvin hit Stewart who scored his second of the game to put Lynchburg up 5-4 with 6:27 remaining. Smith then notched his second to tie the game once more. But the tie would not last long, as Stewart completed his hat trick with 4:07 remaining.
Gettysburg once again responded after calling a timeout, as they tied the game with 50 seconds left. Following a few turnovers, Maddux scored his third of the game with seven seconds left to give GC the win.
Smith also registered a hat trick for the Bullets (3-0 overall). Gettysburg outshot the Hornets 23-12, but Hawley made a career-high 16 saves in the loss. Bobby Distler won 10 of his 17 faceoff attempts in the game as well.
Lynchburg (2-1) continues its difficult two-game Spring Break road trip. The Hornets will head to Beverly, MA to take on the ninth-ranked Endicott College Gulls in the first ever matchup between the two schools. Game time is slated for 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
