High Powered Hornets Attack Combines for 12 Goals in the Victory

LEXINGTON, VA – The starting attack trio of Todd Galvin, Aaron Murphy, and Austin Stewart combined for 12 goals in the #5 Lynchburg College men's lacrosse 15-6 victory over Washington and Lee University on Wednesday night.  The Hornets defeated their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival with the largest margin of victory since the 2008 season.

LC opened up the scoring 42 seconds in after Bobby Distler won the opening faceoff.  Stewart got some free space and put Lynchburg up with his first of the day.  Washington and Lee tied it back up two minutes later but momentum went straight to the Hornets afterward.  Murphy opened up the run at 8:36 to put the advantage at 2-1.

The Hornets defense successfully killed a penalty before two more tallies came from Stewart, with Murphy assisting on both.  The first was a low rocket into the back right corner.  Stewart completed his hat trick after catching a pass on the goalie's doorstep.  He scored after being pushed into the crease, and the goal was allowed because of the push.  With just under three minutes left in the first, Dane Angell added to the Lynchburg lead.

Galvin opened up the second quarter to complete the five-goal run with a blistering shot through a slew of defenders that found the back of the net.  The two teams then went back and forth during the remainder of the period.  Berk Ellis caused a turnover, and after picking up the groundball, used his speed to get Stewart the ball, who connected for his fourth of the night.  The Generals added a late one as the Hornets entered the half with a 7-3 lead.

At the start of the third, the dynamic duo of Murphy and Stewart combined once again to add to the Lynchburg lead.  The Generals responded with a tally from Graeme Weaver at 11:12, but LC responded with six straight.  Colin McGuire hit Galvin on the first goal.  One minute later, Murphy notched his second of game, after Jacob Fuller found him separating from his man.  McGuire then added his own late in the third, before Stewart scored with only one tick remaining in the period to give LC a 12-4 lead.

Daniel Owens opened up the fourth quarter scoring, before Stewart finished off the six goal barrage.  W&L would score two late goals that surrounded Aaron Murphy's third of the night, to finish out the scoring.

Stewart finished the night with 7 goals and an assist, to add to his leading 40 goals.  Distler won over 50% of his faceoff attempts in the victory.  Weaver and Christian Zanetis each had two goals in the loss for the Generals (7-5 overall, 2-2 ODAC).

Lynchburg (7-2, 3-0) continues its road trip this Friday.  The Hornets play fellow ODAC member Bridgewater College (4-7, 0-3) with first faceoff coming at 7 p.m.
