#17 Field Hockey Stays Unbeaten with 3-1 Comeback Win Over #14 Mary Washington
LYNCHBURG, VA – The 17th-ranked Lynchburg College field hockey team came from behind to win 3-1 Wednesday evening against #14 University of Mary Washington in a battle of top 20 teams. The Hornets improve to 5-0 on the season, a record that now includes two wins over ranked opponents.
The Eagles scored off their sixth penalty corner when Carlee Budd found Kathleen Namey 22:17 into the first half of play. Down 1-0 at the half, LC faced only its second deficit of the season. At this point, it was all UMW as the Eagles led 6-0 in corners at the break.
The second half would prove to be different story offense-wise for the home team. Lacey Elliott put away a pass from Kayla Copeman on a breakaway to even the score at one 10 minutes into the second half. Lynchburg broke the tie 16 minutes later as senior captain Meredith Bradsher scored after collecting a stray ball amid a mass of defenders in front of the goal. The Hornets gave themselves a more comfortable lead just three minutes later when Alyssa Mills one-timed one in on a breakaway cross from Elliott at the 64:52 mark.
Elliott recorded a goal and an assist on the night and Copeman recorded her eighth point of the season (team-high) with her assist. Beka Hess made nine big saves in goal for Lynchburg, while Caroline Freeman made five saves on nine shots for the visitors. Mary Washington (4-2) also led in corners 13-4 as well as total shots 19-12.
Lynchburg (5-0) hopes to continue its undefeated start to the season as the Hornets take on Wesley College on Shellenberger Field Saturday at noon.
