#5 Trinity Women's Soccer Wins Battle of Top Five Teams 1-0 over #1 LC
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Trinity University (TX) women's soccer team handed top-ranked Lynchburg College its first loss in over 22 months Sunday, defeating the Hornets 1-0. Lynchburg last tasted defeat on November 17, 2013, falling 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The first 45 minutes was dominated by both defenses and was scoreless heading into intermission.
Lynchburg controlled possession to start the second half, but the Tigers netted their goal on a counterstrike. Brigitte Taylor lofted the ball behind the LC defense and Colleen Markey won a struggle for possession and fired a shot into the undefended net.
Both teams had scoring opportunities down the stretch, including an LC surge with one minute remaining that was stymied by Trinity keeper Jane Thompson before the Hornets could get off a potential game-tying shot.
Trinity held a 12-9 edge in shots and Lynchburg had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Thompson made three saves for Trinity (5-0-1), while Hornet net-minder Tess Frelick stopped five shots.
Lynchburg (6-1) makes the short trek across town to square off with Randolph College Tuesday at 7 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match.
