Hornet Women's Basketball Posts 73-60 Win at Meredith
RALEIGH, NC – The Lynchburg College women's basketball team had four players in double figures Saturday as the Hornets defeated Meredith College 73-60 in non-conference play. Senior point guard Sammi Goldsmith shattered the single-game school record with 14 assists on the afternoon, easily surpassing the old record of 10. Five players had each dished out 10 assists in a contest in LC history, including Goldsmith four different times - twice this season.
Lynchburg jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one period, but the Avenging Angels cut into the cushion by out-scoring the Hornets 22-16 in the second quarter. Meredith trailed by just six (66-60) with 5:48 remaining on the game clock, but the LC defense clamped down and held the Angels scoreless the remainder of the contest.
Goldsmith added six points and four rebounds to her record-setting assist total. Sophomore guard Olivia DeFrancesco drilled four three pointers and finished with a team-high 14 points. Charmaine Hairston poured in 13, Caroline Naumann posted 12 and Sarah Coronel netted 11 to go with seven steals. Sarah Coon recorded seven points and a team-best six rebounds. The Hornets shot 49 percent from the floor (28-57) and forced 24 turnovers.
Jessi Hayes scored a game-high 16 with 11 rebounds for Meredith (2-8), while Gabi Jessup posted 12 points.
Lynchburg (9-2) hosts Washington & Lee University Wednesday at 6 p.m. in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference match-up. The game was originally scheduled for noon.
