Box Score Sweet Briar, Va. -- The Women's Soccer team recorded their 13th shut out of the season and second game with 10 goals after defeating Sweet Briar College, 10-0. With the win the Hornets record their second straight victory and stay within striking distance of the top spot in the ODAC.
Sophomore Caitlin Mertens opened the scoring in the 4th minute with a header from a beautiful cross by sophomore Sarah Hammock. Five minutes later senior Natalie Deacon fired a ball from the backline that caught Hammock in stride and the midfielder took two touches and fired home the second goal for Lynchburg. Mertens would get goal number two on the day after she faked out the keeper and finished into an empty net, her team-leading ninth goal on the season.
Freshman Madalyn Amos would link up with junior Rachel Cooke who netted the goal just seconds after Mertens second tally. Freshman Alyssa Rudy would record her fourth goal on the season and put Lynchburg up 5-0 in the 17th minute. Amos would register another assist after sending in a cross that sophomore Kennedy Jakubek put past the keep at the left post sending the Hornets up big at half.
The second half saw the Hornets continue to dominate as they fired off 17 shots, four of which were goals.
Senior defenseman Christine Domecq scored the second goal of her career on an assist by freshman Sarah Crider just a minute into the second half. Five minutes later freshman Natalya Rodriguez sent in a cross with which Crider chipped the keep for her first career goal.
Cooke would tally another goal in the 63rd minute after senior Elizabeth Oden played a smooth through ball to the junior who turned and blasted it into the back of the net. With already two assists, Amos would add a goal to her stat line and round out the scoring for Lynchburg in the 74th minute after freshman Taylor Stevens laid off a ball that Amos pushed past the keeper.
Senior goalkeeper Tess Frelick was only called upon to make one save on the day but moves up to 10-1-3. Both backup Lynchburg goalkeepers, Delia LoSapio and Caitlin Dorsch, saw action in the Wednesday afternoon victory.
The Women's Soccer team, ranked second in the South-Atlantic region as of Oct. 19th, will travel to Newport News, Va. for a 5 p.m. match with Christopher Newport on Sunday. The Captains are ranked 15th in the nation and 7th in the South-Atlantic.
