Offense Powers #10 Women's Soccer Past Emory & Henry, 10-0

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Women's Soccer team came out determined to break their scoreless streak of 220 minutes and did just that, firing 53 shots and scoring 10 times in a win over Emory and Henry, 10-0.

Just seven minutes into the game, the Hornets opened up the scoring when freshman Marissa Inglisa, who earned the first start of her career Wednesday night, found the back of the net from a beautiful through ball by sophomore Caitlin Mertens. Just four minutes later Mertens netted a goal of her own, her fifth in the 2016 campaign, sending her team up by two.

Lynchburg would extend their lead to 3-0 after freshman Emily Sanchez, who also earned her first start, put away an easy goal following a mistake by the Wasps goalkeeper. Junior Rachel Cooke and sophomore Kennedy Jakubek would net two goals each in the next 14 minutes as senior Elizabeth Oden and freshman Madalyn Amos were awarded assists on Cooke's goals.

With the lead extended, senior Tess Frelick would be replaced by sophomore Delia LoSapio and later freshman Caitlin Dorsch would come in to relieve LoSapio between the pipes.

Barely a minute into the second frame, Inglisa would find the back of the net for the second time after beating a defender and slotting a shot into the bottom right hand corner, putting Lynchburg up 8-0. Ten minutes later, Sanchez and Mertens would follow suit as they would tally their second score and second assist respectively.

Freshman Alyssa Kopsidas found fellow first-year Georgie Duggan, who rifled a shot into the back of the net in the 80th minute to round out the Hornet scoring. The goal and assist for the freshman duo is the first of the season and of their young careers.

Lynchburg outshot an opponent by another extreme margin, muscling 52 more shots than Emory & Henry while also holding the advantage in corners, 20-1.

The women head to Greensboro for a tilt with the Quakers of Guilford College this Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 pm and return to Shellenberger Field on Oct. 12 when they host ODAC adversary, Washington & Lee, with a kickoff time of 7:00 pm.
