Hornet Baseball Rallies but falls 5-3 at Roanoke
SALEM, VA - A pair of late runs gave the league-leading Roanoke College baseball team a 5-3 victory Wednesday over visiting Lynchburg College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
The Maroons scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Craig Kiley singling home two runners. Lynchburg chipped away at the lead in the top of the second as Brad Hylton singled to send home Matt Ward and cut the deficit to 3-1.
That remained the score until the seventh inning, as Hornet right-hander David Goulding settled down and spun six-straight scoreless frames. LC tied the game in the top of the seventh, as Joe Tomasulo and Jonathan Munn scored unearned runs.
Roanoke made the score 5-3 in the top of the eighth, scoring one run on a wild pitch and a second on a Scott Ellis RBI single.
The Hornets had the tying run at the plate in the ninth with one out, but Roanoke got the last two outs to end the game.
Ward and Hylton each had two hits for LC (6-12/2-3 ODAC) and Ward also walked.
Kiley went 2-4 for Roanoke (11-5/4-1) and also earned the win on the hill in relief.
Lynchburg hosts Emory & Henry College Saturday at noon in an ODAC twinbill.
