LC Baseball Rallies, but Averett scores 7-6 win at City Stadium
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team rallied from a four-run deficit to tie the game, but Averett University defeated the Hornets 7-6 in a non-conference contest played at City Stadium, home of the Lynchburg Hillcats minor league franchise.
Lynchburg jumped ahead 1-0 in the third inning, as Drew Taylor led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Averett took a 5-1 lead with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Lynchburg climbed back in the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Matthew Cotton singled and scored on a triple from Taylor. Taylor crossed the plate on a single from Thomas Powell to cut the lead to 5-3.
LC loaded the bases in the seventh and sent one run home on an error. Cotton brought home the tying run with another single.
Trey Wall singled to make it a 6-5 Averett advantage in the eighth and Kyle Vidano tripled in the ninth to make it 7-5. LC cut the lead to 7-6 with a Cougar three-base error in the ninth, but couldn't bring the tying run home.
Taylor and Joe Tomasulo each had three hits for Lynchburg. Cotton and Tyler Johnson had two hits and Jake Conner threw five innings of relief, allowing two earned runs.
Nic Futrell was 2-5 for Averett (11-13).
The Hornets (7-14) travel to Hampden-Sydney College Thursday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game at 3:30 p.m.
