LC Baseball swept at Va. Wesleyan
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team traveled across the state Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Virginia Wesleyan College, but dropped both ends of the twinbill 9-4 and 8-6. A huge Hornet rally in the final contest fell just short.
Lynchburg trailed 2-0 in the opener, but cut into the lead with a run in the fourth on an RBI single from Jonathan Munn. The Hornets took the lead in the top of the sixth with two more runs. Joe Tomasulo doubled and Munn switched places with him with another two-bagger. Matt Ward singled with two outs to give LC a 3-2 lead.
The lead held until the bottom of the seventh, when the Marlin sent four runners home, capped by a triple from Brandon Kussmaul. VWC added two insurance runs in the eighth and LC scored a final run in the ninth on an error.
Ward had three hits in game one, while Munn and Brad Hylton each had two. Kussmaul had three hits for VWC.
LC tied the game at one in the nightcap with a run in the top of the second off the bat of Nathan Sharp. The Marlins scored three runs each in the second and fifth innings to move ahead 7-2. Sharp singled to drive in another run in the sixth to cut the edge to 7-3.
Sharp delivered again in the eighth, ripping a two-run double to right center field and bring home Matthew Cotton and Hylton. Sharp went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from Drew Taylor to cut the lead to 7-6.
Va. Wesleyan scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, and LC loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth but couldn't score.
Sharp was 3-3 with two RBI while Ward had two hits. Justin Erby and D. Kennedy each had three hits for VWC (13-6/7-2 ODAC).
Lynchburg (7-18/3-7) finishes up a tough stretch of five games in four days and six this week. LC travels to Guilford College for more ODAC play Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
