Hornet Baseball Opens ODAC Play with Split at Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, VA – Sophomore right-hander David Goulding threw a complete-game shutout in the opener as the Lynchburg College baseball team split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader at Bridgewater College Saturday.
Goulding allowed just five hits and a walk over nine frames in the opener with four strikeouts in a 1-0 LC victory.
Lynchburg scored the only run it would need in the top of the fourth inning. Thomas Powell led off with a single and Drew Taylor sacrificed him to second and reached base himself on an Eagle error. Joe Tomasulo followed with a base-hit to load the bases with no outs. Powell scored on a double play groundout.
Bridgewater threatened twice late in the ballgame. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh, but Goulding got out of the jam. BC got the first runner on base in the bottom of the ninth, but the runner was quickly erased on a double play.
Ryan Leake was the tough-luck loser for Bridgewater, tossing innings runs of three-hit, no-walk ball with one unearned run.
The Eagles took the nightcap 7-3, breaking open a tie game with three runs in the seventh frame. Tomasulo, Matt Ward and Matthew Cotton each had two hits for LC, and Drew Taylor doubled and drove home a run. Nathan Sharp also hit a two-bagger for the Hornets.
Cavin Clyde and Kenner Berry each had three hits for Bridgewater (7-4/1-1 ODAC).
Lynchburg (4-9/1-1 ODAC) hosts Ferrum College Tuesday at 2 p.m. in a single non-conference game.
