LC Baseball Plays first game on Fox Field, Ferrum Defeats Hornets 9-3
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team played its first game of the season Tuesday afternoon at home on Fox Field, but Ferrum College defeated the Hornets 9-3 in non-conference action.
Lynchburg got on the board first, as Drew Taylor scored on a single from Jonathan Munn in the bottom of the first inning.
The Panthers plated two runs in the top of the third, and followed with a single run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. A pair of doubles got the seventh inning going for Ferrum, and the visitors scored two in the seventh and three in the eighth.
Lynchburg came alive offensively in the eighth inning. Tyler Johnson doubled with one out and Nathan Sharp followed with a single. Thomas Powell doubled to bring home Johnson and send Sharp to third. Will Harris lofted a sacrifice fly to send Sharp home and cut the lead to 8-3. Ferrum added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, aided by two LC errors.
The Hornets left the bases loaded in the second and fourth innings, and stranded 13 runners on the afternoon.
Joe Tomasulo had two hits for LC, as did Matt Ward and Sharp. Munn finished with a hit and a walk.
Ty Comer went 3-5 with a double, a triple and three RBI for Ferrum (10-6). Matt Wilder threw six innings of six hit ball, allowing no earned runs while striking out five.
The Hornets (4-10) host Washington & Lee University Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader, starting at noon on Fox Field.
