Ryan Irby Throws Seven Perfect Innings; LC Defeats H-SC 2-1 in 11
LYNCHBURG, VA – Lynchburg College freshman Ryan Irby threw seven perfect innings Wednesday afternoon and the Hornet baseball team defeated visiting Hampden-Sydney College 2-1 in 11 innings in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game.
Irby was dominant through the first seven frames, striking out six Tigers as LC forged a 1-0 lead. The Hornets broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth, as Matthew Stevens hit an RBI double to left field.
John Lloyd opened the top of the eighth with a double for H-SC and was sacrificed to third base. Irby was removed from the game and the Tigers tied the score on a single from Jacob Fontana.
Lynchburg struck in the bottom of the 11th. Thomas Powell singled and later moved to second base. With two outs, Jonathan Munn hit a low liner to right field to bring home Powell and end the game.
The Hornets got excellent pitching from Irby and David Goulding. Goulding allowed just one hit and no walks in his 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen with four strikeouts for the victory. Matt Ward had two hits for LC.
Eric O'Brien started for H-SC (21-13/7-8 ODAC) and worked seven innings, giving up six hits, no walks and one earned run, and Dylan Gonzales was un-scored on in his three innings of relief. There were no walks issued by any of the five pitchers.
The Hornets (8-23/4-11 ODAC) travel to Eastern Mennonite University Saturday for another ODAC doubleheader, with first pitch of game one slated for noon.
