Hornets Fall 7-2 to Methodist Despite three hits from Matt Ward
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team hosted Methodist University Wednesday in non-conference play, and the visiting Monarchs scored a 7-2 victory.
Methodist took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and added two runs each in the sixth and eighth frames.
Matt Ward broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth with a solo blast over the left-field fence. Matthew Stevens pinch hit in the ninth and doubled, and moved to third on a Drew Taylor single. Ward doubled to plate Stevens.
The Hornets used nine different pitchers on a day designated to give the staff work. Gerald Taylor, Logan Woodall, Chris Morelli, Kyle Jacksic and David Goulding each threw a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Ward finished 3-5 for LC, while Nathan Sharp was 2-4.
Alex Rodriguez, Caleb Lee and Austin Fuentes each had two hits for Methodist (20-16).
The Hornets (9-26) host Shenandoah University, ranked #11 this week in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association top 25 poll, Saturday at noon. The program's five seniors will be honored prior to the first game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader.
