LC Baseball Leads late, but Roanoke Rallies for 3-2 win
LYNCHBURG, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team led for most of the contest, but Roanoke College rallied for a 3-2 victory Tuesday in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game.
LC took the lead early with a run in the bottom of the first. Joe Tomasulo singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on a Matt Ward double.
The pitchers and defenses dominated the next four innings, as LC's Josh Irby and RC's Harrison Richards kept it a 1-0 game until the sixth inning. Roanoke scored a run in the top of the sixth, but LC countered in the bottom half of the frame. Nathan Sharp doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Munn to again give the Hornets a one-run lead.
The Maroons answered with two runs in the top of the eighth, the big blows coming on doubles from Will Decker and Clark Crutchfield. Lynchburg left the tying run stranded at third base in the bottom of the ninth.
Irby worked 5 2/3 innings, scattering four hits and three walks and allowing one run. Tomasulo and Sharp each had hits and walks for LC.
Richards worked eight innings for the win for Roanoke (18-11/7-5 ODAC), allowing six hits, two walks and two earned runs with five strikeouts. Eli Sumpter picked up the save.
The Hornets (7-20/3-9 ODAC) travel to Averett University Wednesday for a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
