Nathan Sharp Homers to Tie Game late, but Averett Takes 4-3 victory
DANVILLE, VA – The Lynchburg College baseball team rallied back from a late three-run deficit Wednesday, but Averett University scored a 4-3 victory in non-conference play.
The host Cougars scored two runs in the first inning and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth before the LC offense got untracked. Drew Taylor singled with one out in the top of the seventh and stole second. Joe Tomasulo reached base on an error, and Nathan Sharp delivered a two-out, three-run home run to left field to tie the score at three all.
Averett scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Dallas Smithers after two Hornet miscues in the frame.
Jonathan Munn and Taylor each had two hits for Lynchburg. Zack Engelmann started on the hill and tossed five solid innings, while Graham Boggio worked 3 1/3 innings of relief, allowing no earned runs.
Nic Futrell, Smithers and Ramel Reynolds each had two hits for Averett (18-16).
The Hornets (7-21) host Randolph-Macon College, the #5 ranked team in NCAA Division III, on Saturday. Game one of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
