Fredericksburg, VA -- Lynchburg Field Hockey dropped their third consecutive game at the University of Mary Washington, 4-1. The Hornets got on the board first, 6:43 into the contest. The goal was Elliott's third of the season which leads all Hornets. Less than six minutes later, the Eagles' Christine Loehr tied the game off a corner and it remained tied at 1 heading into the break.
The second half was all UMW. Lauren Hopkins scored the first of her two goals of the game at the 40:57 mark, while the second came sixteen minutes later off the stick of Beka Hess. Hess faced 17 shots, turning aside 13, remaining in the ODAC Top 5 for goals against and save percentage.
With under five minutes remaining, the Eagles added another score off a corner and wrapped it up with a final score of 4-1.
Senior forward, Alyssa Mills, said that "Today was really a great game of hockey. Very back and forth, high skill level from both teams." On the lack of scoring she said, "I think that we had a hard time capitalizing on opportunities to score...defensively, we need to mark up better."
The Hornets tallied just 11 shots compared to Mary Washington's 25 while UMW was also afforded 5 penalty corners compared to two for Lynchburg, both of those in the first half.
Assistant Coach Jenni Smith says that the team needs to work on "playing consistent for two halves of the game...we need to get our scoring game going and take our opportunities when they come."
The Hornets (2-3) will travel to Norfolk, VA next Saturday for an ODAC game vs Virginia Wesleyan at 12:00pm.
