Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Greensboro, 3-8 & 6-4

Around the Horn

Lynchburg split a Sunday double header at Fox Field against USA South member, Greensboro College. The Hornets fell to the Pride 8-3 in Game 1 before bouncing back with a 6-4 victory in Game 2.

Game 1 Breakdown

- Greensboro jumped out to a quick one run lead in the 1st inning

- In the 2nd inning the Pride added three more runs to go up on the Hornets, 4-0

- The Hornets answered back in bottom half of the inning when junior Will Harris jacked a homer just inside the foul pole in left field to cut the deficit to three

- The following inning, Greensboro answered with two more runs to make it a 6-1 lead for the Pride

- Greensboro would add another run in the 6th inning

- The Pride would add an insurance run in the 7th inning to snag Game 1

Game 2 Breakdown

-  Greensboro would get on the board first in the opening inning, putting Lynchburg in an early hole

- Junior Matt Ward would drive in freshman Shawn Allen on a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning to knot up the score

- The Hornets got the bats going again in the 4th inning when sophomore Griffin Wild doubled to left center, bringing home Ward and advancing sophomore Nathan Sharp to third

- In next at-bat Thomas Powell singled to center field that brought home Wild and Sharp to make it 4-1

- The Pride would answer back with a run of their own in the 5th inning, cutting the Hornet lead to just two

- Will Harris tripled in the 5th inning, scoring senior Ryan Katona to make it 5-2

- In the same inning, Sharp hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Harris

- Greensboro would make it interesting in the final inning scoring twice two runs but a big double play secured the win for the Hornets

- Senior Zack Engelmann pitched seven innings while only allowing two runs to earn his second win of the season

The Hornets will travel to Arlington, Va. when to play Marymount (Va.) on Saturday for a double header; the first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
