Field hockey's late flurry stings Shenandoah

Box Score

Lynchburg, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's field hockey team scored thrice in the waning minutes to secure a key 4-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference win over Shenandoah Wednesday evening at the Liberty University Field Hockey Complex.

Sophomore forward Emily Dudley (Westminster, Md.) scored two of the host Hornets' three second-half goals, both assisted by senior forward Nikki Simpao (Stafford, Va.).

Sophomore forward Jackie Lerro (Royersford, Pa.) chipped in another on sophomore midfielder Alex Rebman's (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) first-career assist. Senior forward Kayla Copeman (Williamsburg, Va.) added Lynchburg's other goal.

SU goalkeeper Isabella Morande made seven saves.

Lynchburg out-shot its guest, 29-8.

THE RUNDOWN

Final: Lynchburg 4, Shenandoah 1

Records: Lynchburg (7-5, 3-0 ODAC), Shenandoah (9-4, 2-2 ODAC)

Venue: Liberty University Field Hockey Complex, Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The hosts got on the board first, thanks to Rebman's 19th-minute trackdown of a loose rebound, which she shoveled to Lerro for the opening goal.

  • Shenandoah evened the tally just before halftime, when Kelsey Jones took Taylor Hayes' feed and finished shortly after a penalty corner.

  • Lynchburg controlled most of the second half and finally broke the tie in the 59th minute, when Simpao played a ball into space in the center of the circle, and Dudley chased it down and slapped it into the back of the cage.

  • Two minutes later, Copeman drove the ball along the right endline and heaved it into traffic, where it caromed off a defender's foot and went in.

  • Lynchburg added the icing in the 64th minute, as Dudley and Simpao repeated their magic from a few minutes earlier.

LOOKING AHEAD

Lynchburg will play its third game of the week Friday at Dickinson. The Hornets and Red Devils square off at 3:30 p.m. in Carlisle, Pa.
